This little spawn of Satan is shedding everywhere. Need to sweep about daily to keep up with it. Maybe I should take him to a barber…
Well this stinks. I was very much looking forward to that nasty Holiday Inn being gutted and renovated into something nicer. As much of a fixture it is in Charleston and as ‘neat’ as it is, it doesn’t really fit with the rest of the architecture around it. It would fit better in a nautical town somewhere in Florida. At least thats my opinion.
This guy has to be the stupidest criminal I’ve ever had the pleasure about which to read. Darwin Award award anyone?
Apparently, Jesus reads WSAZ and posts comments to their ‘Breaking News’ about last weeks “weather condition”.

do not see cloverfield. it is one of the worst movies ever made. it is only an hour twenty minutes and i felt like i was in the theater for four goddamn hours. i wish i could have gotten as lucky as my roommate who got locked out of the theater when he went to smoke during the middle of the movie. theres no real resolution at the end and you don’t give a fuck about the characters. if you really want to know what happens in the movie read the wikipedia page. again, do not see cloverfield.
A welcome to my friends:
This house is a home and a home’s where I belong
Where the feelings are warm and the foundations are strong…
I love hearing that Pavement song on the way to work in the morning. It puts me in a good mood. Especially when I have to be in early. Though, I can’t really complain about my work. I work at an office full of awesome people, we joke around and pretty much watch people hurt themselves all day. And aren’t excited by the return of American Idol tonight? I know I’m not. Though I will probably watch it. But of course under the influence of many libations. And I shall leave you with this quote: “I’d like to be a hairdresser. Or two. I’d like to be two hairdressers.”
fucking pg? the dark knight is going to be pg? a quote from mr. nolan, “is character-driven PG. That way The Joker has to be really scary without resorting to real violence.” i was hoping for psychotic, crazy violent joker. but i guess he’s just scary. or hopefully nolan is a liar.
in my ever constant battle with the bulge and my over-indulgence in all things sweet, i have found that very little helps keep me on track with my eating habits. carbs seem to be my biggest weakness..or should i say sugar? breads, cookies, soda..all that garbage. i’ve managed to cut it out mostly at home (i dont buy the nonsense), but at the office, with the holidays and birthdays, it’s hard to resist those tempting confections. So, in response, I’ve developed a mantra.. rather an attitude about junk food and it seems to be working.
Snobbery
thats right. snobbery. a straight up, chip-on-the-shoulder ‘tude about food. at the risk of sounding like an Oprah episode, here is how i look at it. i’m too damned important to eat garbage. no one else is responsible for my body except for myself and the sooner everyone realizes that, the better. here’s to clean foods, natch.
it’s a new year. no new posts for new year? this is first post! new year. no more posts for the new year! celtics are sick… and i don’t even like b-ball. i think i will have a cheeseburger for lunch. bed now.
The 2007-2008 hockey season is still young with all the fast pace moves, scoring, and hits, but there have been some big controversies already. I’m talking about hits; the Boulerice/Kesler hit, the McAmmond/Downie hit, the Bergeron/Jones hit, and all hits in general. All three of these are examples of various, very nasty checks, where someone got seriously hurt. Here is my break down on those extreme hits and how they are different, how they are the same, and which one I feel was very nasty, but legal.
Boulerice/Kesler
Boulerice’s check against Kesler was completely 100%, pure illegal and from watching the video malicious. In an interview after the hit Boulerice said he wanted to retaliate for an earlier hit from Kesler, so there was premeditation. Also, the kind of check, a cross check, is an illegal check. I do believe that Boulerice did not mean to cross check Kesler in the head, but he did mean to cross check him. Boulerice definitely deserves a suspension for his premeditated attack.
Downie/McAmmond
Downie’s check on McAmmond was scary, plain and simple. From the video it appears that Downie not only wanted to check McAmmond, but was also looking to seriously hurt him. Downie came directly at McAmmond, as he was barreling towards him he left his feet, ensuring that his shoulder would find McAmmond’s head. Like Boulerice’s cross check, it is illegal to leave your feet while making a check, and Downie’s hit is a perfect example of why. Downie should not only be suspended, but should be watched very carefully and thrown out of the league at the slightest indiscretion.
Jones/Bergeron
This hit is very different than the other two and so my analysis will be much longer. Jones’s hit on Bergeron was the kind of hit that happens every game, many, many times a game. Bergeron was injured because of his body positioning. If you watch the video, Bergeron is not only bent over, but practically has his nose along the lip of the boards, no matter how, who, or where he gets hit from Bergeron is going to get seriously injured. This is akin to hearing a train coming and then sticking your head out over the tracks to see it coming.
While it is very unfortunate that Bergeron was badly injured, it had nothing to do with how Jones checked him. The media claims that Bergeron was checked from behind, which is illegal, but that’s not what happened. Bergeron cuts in front of Jones in an attempt to beat him in to the puck, knowingly putting his back to Jones. Anyone who plays, follows or has a working knowledge of hockey knows the first person to the puck gets clobbered. Jones did not leave his feet, he did not cross check, charge, or do anything else sketchy. He made a standard play, the kind of play that is made every game, many times a game. I hate to say that it was Bergeron’s fault when he was so badly injured, but it’s his own fault for putting himself in that position. Jones does not deserve to be suspended.
Everyone needs to keep in mind that hockey is a fast paced contact sport and as such people will get hurt. There are rules in place to minimize the amount and the seriousness of injuries, but there is an assumption of risk when you play. There is also respect and a professional courtesy amongst players that they will not attempt to intentionally injure each other and when that line is crossed penalties and suspensions need to be harsh and heavy. However, the rules need to be consistent or players will be forced to second guess themselves and if that happens the game will slow down and be less interesting and less intense and no one wants that. We need to keep the hitting in hockey, but the hitting in hockey needs to keep clean.
A bit overdue on the updates on the house. We’ve been busy. Painting, spackling, wiring, plumbing; all the good stuff. Check out some before and after pics of the dining room.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t exactly like the fact that my mobile phone service is now controlled by a huge Ma Bell leftover ( I miss Cingular ), however, I am glad to see that this new found national/global domination kick AT&T is on is starting to pay off. First, they buy out GSM based Dobson Communications Corp, the nation’s largest independent mobile provider, gaining 1.7 subscribers in the process (eat that Verizon Wireless) and a filling in big gap in coverage in rural areas… like southeastern West Virginia. Now the Wall Street Journal has reported that AT&T has bought out Aloha Partners.
The nation’s largest phone company would obtain the spectrum from Aloha Partners LP, which holds licenses that cover 196 million people in 281 markets, including the 10 largest and 72 of the top 100.
No word on how AT&T plans to use this. DigitalTV or data are the obvious paths, especially given Aloha Partner’s line of services. I just hope that this finally puts AT&T in the 3G game and moving forward. For being the largest network in the US, it sure hasn’t exactly been pumping out 3G services, not nearly as much as Verizon Wireless.
Look in the mirror, West Virginia. Are we overweight, needing dental work, unable to hold a conversation about Web 2.0 or wikis? Put out that cigarette, and let’s talk.
Yes. Let us talk. Rampant poverty, obesity, heart disease, diabetes, dental decay all are major problems in this state. As a 26 year old guy, steadily employed with health insurance, I often feel guilty. When Ed and I have driven through some of the more impoverished areas of the the state, my mind wanders about the possibilities that lay before me and my fellow Mountaineers. Are there options? Can we move from an Extractive economy and into a Creative economy? Is coal the future of West Virginia? How do we attract and keep a young workforce? This is what Create West Virginia hopes to accomplish. With resources and ideas about how to turn your community to a creative community. This is an idea I totally support. Change on a small level that will grow and expand. If I could afford the $500 admission fee to attend the conference, I would go.
if you can notice, left is the foyer with the floors sanded down to bare wood. it really does not look as good as it comes across in pictures. to the right is the floor stain. we went with a dark walnut. so the whole house is done. three coats of poly, should be able to walk on it on Tuesday. very excited about how the stain turned out; dark enough, but enough to where you can still see the grain.
all gone. floor guys are now working on sanding the floors, nearly done with that. some detail work to do. at this rate, we might be ok with our move in time frame. hell yea.
the closing was today. much work to be done…rather, much work done. Ed and I tore up almost all of the carpet and padding in the entire house tonight. the only carpet left is on the third floor stairs and landing; that’ll be easy. there IS some carpet padding and tack board still left to do in the living room, but i’ll take care of that tomorrow night after the Firm party at the Clay Center. I’m posting progress pictures on flickr. even with the floors in terrible condition, it’s such a dramatic change with the carpet removed. we met quite a few of our neighbors, all seem to be rather nice. I can’t get over how large this place feels even though it’s only 1700 sq ft.
funny note here. as I was tearing up carpet in the basement, i bent over and i swear someone grabbed my ass. the house has a wonderful history. It was a family home for nearly 40 years. The matriarch passed away three years ago who spent her last days in the house. Not sure if she actually passed away there, but who knows. I told Irene to cool it and that we were going to take care of her beautiful home and that we will respect it. who knows, maybe it’s haunted.
